(Oroville, CA) Governor Jerry Brown today signed AB 2189 a bill that grants some illegal immigrants California Drivers Licenses. The move guts a law passed in 2003 that overturned Gray Davis’ attempt to give all those in California illegally licenses.

AB 2189 is an effort by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, author of several previous related measures, to incrementally give drivers licenses to all illegal immigrants. The current legislation is based on an executive order from President Obama that bypassed the legislative process of the elected Congress to give temporary legal status to many younger illegal immigrants.

“Our nation must address immigration in a meaningful manner and stop promoting illegal behavior. On one hand California gives generous benefits including Cal Grants, in-state tuition breaks and now drivers licenses to violators of the laws of our country that could be subject to prosecution. We need a clear and enforceable policy that promotes legal immigration and doesn’t reward illegal immigration.

“Today’s actions by the Governor are simply another slap at those who seek to immigrate legally and obey the laws of our country. How is it right to tell people who want to legally immigrate to go to the back of the line while the state rewards those who break the very laws we ask all to follow?”

“Finally, let’s get this straight…Arizona cannot enforce existing federal laws to crack down on illegal immigration but California can give away taxpayer financed benefits? The state has a $16+ billion deficit. Yet, the Governor signals with his signature that the state can find money for a high speed train boondoggle and these new extra benefits for those who break immigration laws but also threaten citizens to vote for tax increases to fund their children’s education.”

Doug LaMalfa is a fourth generation rice farmer and the Republican candidate for California’s First Congressional District.

Oroville, CA – - Republican State Senator Doug LaMalfa announced this afternoon that he will resign from the State Senate, effective upon the adjournment of session today, in order to allow the special primary election to fill his seat to be consolidated with the November General Election, saving taxpayers at least $2 million.

LaMalfa, a family farmer, is a candidate for Congress in the 1st district, where longtime Rep. Wally Herger is serving his final term. He called serving the north state in the State Senate a “tremendous honor” and one that prepared him for representing the area in Congress.

“With the 2012 session now over, most of the State Senate’s business for the year is done. I’ve thrown my hat over the fence and am taking nothing for granted in my campaign for Congress, but I do not feel it would be right to wait until the end of the year to resign from the Senate. Resigning now gives the Governor the ability to consolidate elections, saving local counties and taxpayers at least $2 million,” said LaMalfa, who will be giving up his salary and benefits early.

“I met with the Governor and he told me he will move quickly to consolidate the elections. I have also been assured by the Senate President Pro Tem that our district offices will remain open and fully functioning in the interim, so that our constituents will continue to have a place to go to receive assistance with state issues,” said LaMalfa.

LaMalfa is midway through his term in the old 4th Senate District. The special election will fill the remaining two years of LaMalfa’s term. If a candidate receives over 50% in the special primary, there is no run-off and that candidate will become the next State Senator.

“Resigning now will ensure that the North State is not left without a representative when the legislature reconvenes in January,” LaMalfa said. “It is the best decision I can make to protect the taxpayers and ensure the North State has a voice in the Senate.”

Contact: Dave Kranz, California Farm Bureau

As a state senator, Doug LaMalfa has remained true to his roots as a fourth-generation rice farmer and stood up to protect California’s farmers and ranchers, according to the California Farm Bureau Federation. Citing LaMalfa’s work to protect private property rights and increase the state’s water supply, CFBF endorsed LaMalfa today in his candidacy for the U.S. Congress.

After serving in both the state Senate and Assembly, LaMalfa, a Republican, seeks election in the 1st Congressional District representing all or part of Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama counties.

“Doug LaMalfa has always recognized the value agriculture brings to the economy and the environment,” California Farm Bureau President Paul Wenger said. “As a farmer, he knows the importance of efficiency and running an economically viable business, one that he can pass on to future generations. In these tough economic times and in a contentious political environment, Doug stands up for what he believes in and knows how to get things done.”

Wenger added that LaMalfa’s understanding of important issues facing farmers and ranchers has become invaluable.

“With Doug LaMalfa in Congress, I know that there will be another voice of reason when burdensome environmental regulations or shortsighted views of property rights threaten the ability for family farmers and ranchers to do what they do best,” Wenger said. “Washington, D.C., could use a dose of clear thinking and solid work ethic from this California farmer.”

The California Farm Bureau Federation works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of more than 74,000 members statewide and as part of a nationwide network of more than 6.2 million Farm Bureau members.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, February 23, 2012

OROVILLE, CA – - County Sheriffs from 10 North State counties have endorsed Doug LaMalfa for Congress

The overwhelming local support from law enforcement is unprecedented and demonstrates Doug LaMalfa’s proven commitment to the district and to working with local officials to keep the North State safe. LaMalfa is the only candidate in CD 1 with significant local support.

LaMalfa announced the endorsements from: Butte County Sheriff Jerry Smith, Colusa County Sheriff Scott Marshall, Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones, Modoc County Sheriff Mike Poindexter, Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner, Plumas County Sheriff Greg Hagwood, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey, Sutter County Sheriff J. Paul Parker and Yuba County Sheriff Steve Durfor.

“Doug LaMalfa has always been a good State legislator. He has represented the district and the people well. He is visible and accessible to local, state, and federal officials, as well as the people. Doug will represent us all as our Congressman”, said Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko.

“The support of local Sheriffs is crucial in campaigns in districts like CD 1,” said LaMalfa’s consultant Dave Gilliard. “In these rural counties, the sheriff is often one of the best known and most popular local officials. The fact that Doug has the support of so many sheriffs in and near CD 1, and opponents have none, is very telling.”

Doug LaMalfa is a fourth generation family farmer and Senator. He is supported by the current Representative for most of the new first congressional district, Wally Herger, who is retiring.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, February 22, 2012

OROVILLE, CA – - Farmer and Senator Doug LaMalfa announced that he was the first candidate in CD 1 to sign the Americans for Tax Reform “Taxpayer Protection Pledge.” LaMalfa signed the Pledge in January during a meeting with ATR President Grover Norquist.

“Big spending in Washington as well as Sacramento, has broken the budgets of both. Yet the answer from the spenders is to always go after the wallets of American producers for more of what they earn, not reforming government,” said LaMalfa. “I will continue to oppose these attempts to raise taxes on the American people, because we are already paying too much, and receiving poor results.”

ATR states this about the pledge: “The Taxpayer Protection Pledge is actually made to a candidate’s constituents, who are entitled to know where candidates stand before sending them to the capitol.”

LaMalfa has quickly established himself as the choice of taxpayers in the First Congressional District campaign. He has already been endorsed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and National Tax Limitation Committee President Lew Uhler.
